Former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze does not recognize the country's successes in the political arena, as he told the Georgian weekly "Asaval-Dasavali", while giving an interview that last year Georgia achieved successes only in sports.

"Our basketball players have reached the final of the European Championship, rugby players will go to the World Championship final, some success was observed in football, and I'm happy for them all," he said.

Regarding Georgia's political and international success, Shevardnadze said that "while the country is on the knees and humiliated by defeat, no one has the right to talk about successes in the political arena."

Shevardnadze complained that the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili did not congratulate him on the New Year. However he noted with satisfaction that he received many congratulatory letters from his former colleagues, and he was especially pleased with a letter from his old friend, former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher.
