Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who met with MPs, identified the development and adoption of a new legislation, the national TV channel Altyn Asyr reported on Friday.

According to him, it also needs to bring "the existing regulations into conformity with the objectives of the reforms in order to better protect the rights and freedoms of citizen in our state."

"One of the fundamental rights of citizens under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Turkmenistan joined in 1996, is the right of citizens to form political parties," Berdimuhamedov said.

The head of state underlined "the need to accelerate work on preparing a draft law on political parties, as well as unifying principles of the elected institutions of civil society, presenting them to a codified piece of legislation, which will include all the electoral laws."

Berdimuhamedov touched upon this topic in October 2010, saying that under national law, the citizens have right to form political parties and public unions.

"The Constitution of Turkmenistan guarantees the equality of rights and freedoms of citizens irrespective of nationality, race, sex, religion, etc., including, regardless of political beliefs and party affiliation," he said.

"The state does not preclude, but rather welcomes the establishment of political parties and private newspapers, most important is that they would help harmonious development of our society on the basis of the spiritual values of the Turkmen people," said the president.
