After Mubarak's resignation, the stabilization of the situation in Egypt will take time, and the coming elections would be held not in September, but will be delayed, the head of the London Centre Arab East, Salim Zuheyri.
"Egypt will pass through a transitional period, and it is possible that presidential elections will be postponed to another date," Zuheyri told Trend by telephone from London.
Large-scale anti-governmental protests are ongoing in Egypt. Thousands of people in different cities across the country have taken to the streets, demanding President Hosni Mubarak's resignation and the dissolution of parliament. The unrests in the country have killed at least 300 people and have injured over 4,000.
Mubarak made a statement and promised that he would not run for a sixth term as president in the upcoming September elections. Several opposition leaders were not satisfied with promises of the president and continue to demand his immediate resignation. As a result, on Friday Mubarak announced his resignation and the leadership in the country passed to military.
According to Zuheyri, Egypt is a country which is not alien to democracy and democratic elections. "The next presidential election in Egypt will be held democratically," said Zuheyri.
He said that after the revolution, the Egyptian people will not allow the president, who will play with the rules of the U.S. or another country, to come to power and therefore, likely Amr Moussa, who announced this morning that resigns as Arab League Secretary General, will come to power in Egypt.
"As Omar Suleiman will not run for presidency, then at the moment Amr Moussa will have more chances to become president," he said.
Zuheyri also do not exclude that before the elections, maybe a new candidate will appear and the stabilization in the country is possible after economic and political reforms, as well as after the lifting of emergency.
"If the new government takes into account the demands of the people and carry out appropriate reforms, the situation in the country will stabilize soon," he said.
