After France, the interim National Council of Libya will be recognized by Spain, Portugal and other EU countries, political adviser to the opposition National Council of Libya, Ahmed Khalifa, said in an interview to RT television in Arabic - 'Rusia al-Yaum'.

"The next will be Spain and Portugal, as well as other countries that will become known at the session in Brussels on Saturday," said Khalifa.

On Thursday, Sarkozy received at the Elysee Palace two envoys of the National Council - Mahmoud Jibril and Ali Essaui. After the meeting, it became known that France became the first country recognizing the National Council of the only lawful government of Libya. Paris also plans to send an ambassador to Benghazi.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy promised the envoys of the Libyan opposition National Council, which he accepted as the only legitimate government of Libya, to accredit the ambassador of the National Council in France soon.

Khalifa stressed that only the opposition National Council of Libya is the real representative of people's interests both inside and outside the country.

"We would like to see all European countries recognizing the National Council, and that the U.S. and UK are taking steps to confirm their denial of the legality of this regime, which does not represent the true interests of the people," he said.

Khalifa said the French position unanimously reflects the attitude of European states, and it denies the legitimacy of Gaddafi's regime.

"France's recognition of the National Council became the first progressive step, and it pleased us, and led to respect," he stressed.
