The CIS Heads of State underscored the need for peaceful resolution of the conflicts existing in the region, RIA Novosti reported.

" The CIS Heads of State are sure that a peaceful settlement of the existing conflicts is the main condition for successful development of the organization," a statement of the CIS Leaders summarizing 20-year activity of the Commonwealth reads. "The main condition for successful development of the CIS will be settlement of the existing conflicts through peaceful means based on mutual confidence-building measures, principles and norms of the international law."

To ensure the secure safety of citizens, the sides intend to further strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism and other violent manifestations of extremism, illegal migration and human trafficking, and drug trafficking.

The parties also agreed that the CIS will continue the practice of political talks on key issues in world politics and international issues of mutual interest. The CIS heads of state regard as useful the initiatives aimed at preserving regional and global security, including Russia's proposal on the Treaty on European Security.

"The main outcome of the 20-year activity of the Commonwealth is creation of conditions for the steady development of mutually beneficial cooperation that meets the national interests of each CIS member -state," the statement reads.

The statement notes that the activity of the CIS Observation Mission, which monitors elections and referendums in member states of the Commonwealth, gains more broad recognition in the international community.
