Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct.28 / Trend, M. Aliyev /
Non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council (UNSC) redoubles the importance of issues that Azerbaijan puts forward in other authoritative international organizations, MP, member of Azerbaijani delegation to the Euronest PA Fuad Muradov told Trend on Thursday.
"Now, all countries will have to be more attentive to Azerbaijan's position," Muradov said.
He said this membership will give an impetus to strengthening of Azerbaijan's position in the international arena.
According to Muradov, it will create another platform for informing the world community about Azerbaijan's realities and its fair position.
Muradov said it is quite difficult to be elected as the UNSC member from the East European region, and Azerbaijan's election is the result of work undertaken by President Ilham Aliyev.
Azerbaijan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013, gaining 155 votes from the UN member countries.
Before the last round of voting, Slovenian Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar announced the withdrawal of his country's candidature as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. In a voting round prior to this statement, Azerbaijan gained 116 votes, and Slovenia only 77.
In the last round 155 countries voted for Azerbaijan, 24 countries abstained and another 13 still voted for Slovenia.
In general, Azerbaijan gained more votes than Slovenia in previous six voting rounds, but was unable to collect 129 votes necessary for the election.
