Azerbaijan has joined more than 200 international agreements after it adopted its Constitution, Farhad Abdullayev, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan, told newspaper Respublika in an interview on the occasion of the Constitution Day of November 12.

The Constitution of the Azerbaijan Republic was adopted through a nationwide voting on November 12, 1995.

"Since the Constitution was adopted, important reforms in the field of legal provisions were carried out, as a result of which there was formed an important normative base regulating different fields of Azerbaijan's judicial system," Abdullayev said.

The Constitution of Azerbaijan broadly reflects modern ideas and values determining directions of development of modern civilized communities and allowing building a legal state and civil community, the Chairman said.

"The Constitution fixes such principles as recognition of nation as the only source of state power; strict observation of the principle of division of powers; proclamation of the provision of human rights and freedoms and civil rights as the top objective of the Azerbaijani State; guarantee of pluralism in the political system; and prevalence of the international law over the national law, except for constitutional acts and acts adopted through referenda," he noted.
