Candidates for new CE Commissioner for Human Rights named

A new CE Commissioner for Human Rights will be elected within the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), to be held on January 23 - 27, 2012.

The CE current Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg's term of office expires on March 31, 2012.

The candidates from different countries are nominated for this post. The CE Committee of Representatives was held on November 24, 2011. The voting on candidates nominated for the post of CE Commissioner for Human Rights was held. As a result, the list of three candidates with the most number of votes was submitted to the PACE. They are Niels Munieks (Latvia), Frans Timmermans (Netherlands), and Yves Monet (Belgium).

CE Commissioner for Human Rights will be elected by a majority of votes among three candidates nominated by the CE Committee of Representatives at the winter session on Jan. 23 - 27, 2012.

Five candidates were initially nominated for this post. The term of office of the CE Commissioner for Human Rights is six years.
