Ambassador: Azerbaijan’s election to UN Security Council shows country’s increased prestige

The Turkic-American Alliance held a presentation on Azerbaijan in Washington, the Azerbaijani Embassy in the U.S told Trend on Thursday.

Addressing the meeting, Azerbaijani ambassador to the U.S Elin Suleymanov spoke about the relations between U.S. and Azerbaijan.

Thinking about the way that Azerbaijan has passed, Suleymanov said that the fact that Azerbaijan was elected as a nonpermanent member of UN Security Council shows the country's increased credibility and confidence in the world.

Speaking about the country's role in the region, the ambassador stressed that the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is the largest taxpayer in Georgia, as well as the largest investor in the Turkish private sector. Suleymanov stressed that Azerbaijan's share in the economy of the South Caucasus is 85 percent today and the development of partner countries in the region is important for Azerbaijan. The ambassador added that Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev laid down the foundation of the strategy.

Speaking about the Azerbaijani-Georgian cooperation in the region, the ambassador stressed the development of Georgian economy and Azerbaijan's important role in this process. Suleymanov said that the result of Armenia's destructive position in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is that it stays away from the region's economic development. He said that this policy is harmful to the Armenian people and will have serious consequences for Armenia's further development.

The ambassador also said that the Azerbaijani society's main values are tolerance and openness.
