Azerbaijan, Baku, March 17 / Trend M.Aliyev /

Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Political Analysis and Information Provision Department head Elnur Aslanov commented on rally held on March 17 by a group of opposition parties to mass media outlets.

"The rally authorized by Baku's executive power and held by a number of youth organizations once again demonstrated the lack of social base for the opposition parties. For many years the opposition political organizations said about the existence of the so-called "numerous protest electorate" in Azerbaijan. However, they often appealed to the issue of lack of appropriate place for their rallies. Constantly justifying its failure by the lack of conditions for holding so-called 'numerous actions' the opposition parties tried to prove foreign audience that the right to freedom of assembly is not respected in Azerbaijan," Elnur Aslanov said.

He believes today's action demonstrated the groundlessness of these allegations. "First, the government allocated a place for this and subsequent rallies. Second, security of participants was ensured. Third, the initiators had enough time to organize this event. But even this rally of opposition organizations disseminated in the social networks and the Internet could not bring more than 250-300 people to the place allocated by the City Hall. This once again proves that the modern Azerbaijani youth does not see in the opposition parties an alternative to the current authorities," Elnur Aslanov said.
