Debates over the candidates for the Iranian president will not be broadcast live in 2013, chairman of the parliamentary commission Amir Khojasteh was quoted as saying, FARS agency said today.

Khojasteh said this decision was made at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on Sunday.

The debates were broadcast live in Iran for the first time before the presidential elections in 2009.

The last presidential elections were held in Iran on June 12, 2009. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won them for the second time after his victory in 2005. His rivals, the leaders of the Green Movement, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi claimed that the election results were rigged and called on people to protest. During these rallies, besides the opposition leaders, dozens of Green Movement members were arrested.

Iran's presidential elections will be held in June 2013.
