Georgian President: Women should be actively involved in development of country

Women should be actively involved in the development of the country, and Georgia is working in this direction, President Mikheil Saakashvili said.

Saakashvili received the United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer on Wednesday.

Mikheil Saakashvili expressed the hope that the traditional relations and cooperation between the countries in the priority issues will continue in the future. In particular, support for the defense, in the process of NATO integration, trade relations, the development of democracy and reforms.

Georgian President expressed special gratitude to the U.S. administration for a unique and unambiguous support for the territorial integrity of the country.

Gender equality and the empowerment of women in the region was also the topic of discussion. Saakashvili said women should be actively involved in the development of the country and Georgia is working intensively in this direction.

Melanne Verveer, in turn, said that Georgia has made great steps in this direction and that the progress is noticeable. She noted that the two countries have been working together for a long time in this respect, and this cooperation should be more active in the future.

The Ambassador also noted the progress that Georgia has reached with participation of women. In this regard, she highlighted the role of First Lady Sandra Roelofs.
