Leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) Ismail Haniyeh urges that the organisation should be taken off the list of EU terrorist organisations, Al Jazeera TV channel said today.

He said that Hamas's activity is aimed at defending itself from Israeli aggression against the Palestinians.

Hamas was declared a terrorist organisation by Canada, the European Union, Israel, Japan and the U.S., and banned in Jordan and Egypt during the rule of former President Hosni Mubarak.

Australia and Great Britain include only the military wing of Hamas to the list of terrorist organisations.
