Secretary General: Azerbaijan's GUAM chairmanship a great success

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.19 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the GUAM Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development was very successful, the organisation's Secretary General Valery Chechelashvili believes.

"Many important events have been held the last one being in Dublin, where a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers took place. The Azerbaijani chairmanship ended in New York on a very good note. A resolution was adopted by consensus on cooperation between the UN and GUAM, which strengthens our credibility, reputation and position in the system of international relations, "Chechelashvili told journalists in Baku.

Azerbaijan presided over the organisation in 2012.

The GUAM Secretary General is in Baku to attend the fifth meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation. The meeting will discuss issues relating to previous events and prospects of future cooperation, Chechelashvili said.

GUAM was established by the post-Soviet countries in 1997 during the EU presidential summit in Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organisation, and left four years later. A decision was made to rename GUAM as an international organisation entitled 'Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM', at the body's first summit in Kiev in 2006.
