Azerbaijani opposition party comments on confrontation at National Council meeting

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 4

By Elchin Mehdiyev - Trend:

After discussing the issue of electing Rustam Ibrahimbayov honorary chairman of the National Council, the Musavat party will make a relevant decision, head of Musavat executive office Arif Hajili told Trend on Wednesday.

"All issues must be first agreed upon and then discussed at a session of the National Council," he said.

"We have put forward a number of proposals on the eve of a meeting of the National Council," he said. "We thought that these proposals would be submitted to the Azerbaijani public and the National Council session for discussion after a preliminary agreement with the political groups and public associations, included in the National Council. Unfortunately, this did not happen."

"Therefore, a confrontation occurred at the last meeting of the National Council," Hajili said.

"The National Council is not an organization which was established as a result of voting," he said. "It was created as a result of political forces, unions and certain individuals' voluntary adherence to this organization. Therefore, fundamental decisions must be made only on the basis of a mutual agreement of the main political forces and organizations.

Unfortunately, an inefficient way was chosen at yesterday's session. After discussing the current situation in the Musavat party, we will take the appropriate decisions."
