New Detached General Army created in Azerbaijan’s Nakchivan Autonomous Republic

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree on the establishment of the Detached General Army in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.

Lieutenant General Karam Mustafayev has been appointed the army's commander.

The decree on the establishment of the detached army was announced by the deputy head of the Presidential Administration, Vahid Aliyev at a board meeting of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.

An expanded meeting of the Defense Ministry's Board was held on Dec.20.

Deputy head of presidential administration, Vahid Aliyev, military prosecutor, Lieutenant-General of Justice Khanlar Valiyev, Head of the Main Department of the Ministry of National Security, Major-General Nizami Shirinov took part at the meeting, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.

In accordance with the president's decree, in order to strengthen the defense capability of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, to improve combat readiness of units and formations of the armed forces and to improve the centralized management a detached general army will be created on the basis of the fifth Army Corps.

Azerbaijani Defense Minister, Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov delivered a report at the meeting on the outcomes of combat readiness of the Azerbaijan Armed Forces in 2013 and tasks lying ahead for 2014.

Recent reforms carried out in the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, the state of combat readiness, structural work and a number of other issues were discussed and relevant instructions were given at the board meeting.
