Baku, Azerbaijan, May 26
By Seba Agayeva - Trend:
The ties between Azerbaijan, Turkey and Turkmenistan have always stood at a high level, and we decided to expand them further, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on May 26.
He made the remarks in Azerbaijani capital of Baku at the press conference held following the meeting of foreign ministers of the three countries.
He said Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Turkey are very close historically, and the peoples of these countries share common roots, language and religion.
Davutoglu went on to add that it was decided to hold the meetings in such format twice a year, and this indicates the importance attached to this cooperation by all participating parties.
The minister also said Azerbaijan, Turkey and Turkmenistan intend to develop cooperation with other countries as well.
He stressed that the main goal of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Turkmenistan is to ensure the security in the region, adding that the three countries have set a goal to become regional leaders.
The Turkish FM also congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on the Republic Day.
Such meeting between the high-ranking representatives of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Turkey is held for the first time. Next meeting is scheduled to be held in Turkmen capital of Ashgabat.
Similar formats of meetings between Azerbaijan-Turkey-Georgia and Azerbaijan-Turkey-Iran have already been created, followed by the summits of the foreign ministers and presidents of these countries.
Turkey's Foreign Minister Davutoglu originally announced the decision to create a trilateral Turkey-Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan meeting format during the 20th OSCE Ministerial Council in late 2013.
