EU realizes importance of being friends with Azerbaijan

Baku, Azerbaijan, July 24

By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

The EU has realized that it is better to be friends with Azerbaijan and maintain partner relations following Baku's reaction on anti-Azerbaijani resolutions and various forms of pressure on the country, Fikret Sadikhov, Azerbaijani political analyst, professor of Western University, told Trend July 24.

Sadikhov was commenting on European Council President Donald Tusk's visit to Azerbaijan.

"One must not engage in moralizing and exerting pressure as part of the internal political events," he said.

"Tusk's visit was aimed at hearing Baku, discussing some key topical issues of regional security and outlining the actions that would contribute to the improvement of relations with the EU," he said. "Judging by the results of the visit, Tusk was doing everything necessary to restore the warm bilateral partnership. But Azerbaijan has reiterated that it does not intend to sign any agreements on associated partnership, as they contain a lot of demands and unreasonable conditions that do not meet the interests of the country. But we will cooperate on the basis of partnership."

Sadikhov expressed hope that Tusk will draw appropriate conclusions.

The analyst added that the most important part of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's statement is related to his assessments about the ongoing developments in Armenia and about the absolutely primitive remarks recently made by this country's president in Yerevan.

The head of state decisively proved that these remarks are groundless and gave concrete examples of violation of democratic values and continuation of Armenia's policy of occupation of Azerbaijani territories up to the present day, Sadikhov added.

Furthermore, Sadikhov said he positively assesses Tusk's visit in terms of continuing the bilateral cooperation.

European Council's president made no secret that he understands and appreciates Azerbaijan's role, its significance in ensuring security in the region and in Europe, especially in the energy security, he added.
