The level of professionalism of election administration in Azerbaijan has remained high, which led to the fact that the number of applications and complaints made during elections dropped considerably, Azerbaijan’s representative to the European Court of Human Rights Chingiz Askarov said.
He made the remarks at an event on launching a three-day seminar dedicated to the investigation of election-related complaints in Baku Feb. 27.
Askarov said that expert groups in election commissions can work more efficiently in Azerbaijan.
He also noted that Azerbaijan fully fulfills its commitments under international conventions on elections.
The European Court of Human Rights acknowledges that election legislation serves democracy in Azerbaijan, he added.
Askarov stressed that as compared to European countries, it can be seen that the appeals on elections are of technical nature in Azerbaijan, and there are no serious violations at the legislative level.
Next presidential election in Azerbaijan is to be held on April 11, 2018, according to an order signed Feb. 5 by the country's President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the Calendar Plan of Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission (CEC), pre-election campaigning starts 23 days prior to the voting day and is stopped 24 hours before the start of voting. Thus, the campaigning will start on March 19 and end at 08:00 (local time) on April 10.
