BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 28. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Azerbaijan on the occasion of May 28, Independence Day, Trend reports.
"Congratulations on the Independence Day of Azerbaijan celebrated on May 28, on which we are committed to the motto “one nation, two states”, I sincerely share the well-deserved pride and joy of all our Azerbaijani brothers. With respect and reverence I honor the memory of the heroes who died for the independence of the Motherland," Erdogan wrote on his X page.
Today, Azerbaijan celebrates Independence Day. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic became the first democratic republic not only on the territory of modern Azerbaijan but also in the whole East. It was a parliamentary republic. Its state attributes were adopted—a flag, an anthem. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, however, was only in power for 23 months. After the 11th army of the Bolsheviks captured Azerbaijan on April 28, 1920, the republic was overthrown.
