ZANGILAN, Azerbaijan, May 30. A total of 3,440 mine victims have been registered in Azerbaijan since 1991 to date, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) Vugar Suleymanov said, Trend reports.
He made the remark at today's 3rd International Conference on Humanitarian Demining on the topic “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines - Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future” in Zangilan.
“From November 2020 through May 30, 2024, 361 Azerbaijani citizens have been affected by mines. Of these, 293 people (128 civilians and 165 military servicemen) were injured, and 68 people (53 civilians and 15 military servicemen) were killed,” he emphasized.
Suleymanov added that currently, about 10,285 square kilometers of the country are contaminated to varying degrees by landmines, with estimates that up to 1.5 million landmines were laid during the occupation.
According to him, to date, 1,385 square kilometers of Azerbaijani territory have been cleared of mines.
To note, the 3rd International Humanitarian Demining Conference is attended by over 300 delegates from 75 countries.
The participants include high-ranking officials from various countries, senior UN headquarters staff, representatives of reputable international organizations and demining centers from different countries, as well as officials from accredited diplomatic missions in Azerbaijan.
