BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. Based on the results of the international conference on “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of the Comoros Union” held in Baku on September 3, 2024, the Baku Initiative Group has sent an official letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Chairman of the European Commission, and Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Trend reports.
The letter expresses deep concern over France's illegal occupation of the island of Mayotte, which belongs to the Union of the Comoros, which is a violation of international law.
The letter notes that France is obstructing initiatives aimed at remedying this violation of international law by abusing the fact that it is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Furthermore, France ignores relevant resolutions adopted by international organizations such as the UN General Assembly, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the League of Arab States, and the African Union.
The Declaration, which is one of the main outcomes of the international conference on “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of the Comoros Union," was presented to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Chairman of the European Commission, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and the Chairman of the African Union. Furthermore, a brochure entitled “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of Comoros Union," published by the Baku Initiative Group, was presented to the heads of the above-mentioned organizations.
The Baku Initiative Group in its letter also urged to hold an international conference in connection with the occupation of Mayotte Island and to promote the establishment of relevant working groups within these organizations to end the occupation and protect international law. The Baku Initiative Group expressed its confidence that, through close cooperation with the international community, this issue will soon be resolved based on international law.
