MPs EN ROUTE TO STRASBOURG

An Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation leaves for Strasbourg, France, to attend the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), June 20 through 24.

“On the first day of the (summer) session, there will be discussed issues concerning facts of kidnapping in Mexico, objectives for the current millennium and environmental aspects. The second day will focus on the honoring of Russia’s obligations to the Council of Europe, with the third day to accentuate on media and terrorism, as well as the existing situation in Kosovo and the issue of so-called political prisoners in Azerbaijan. On the last day, the PACE will debate on a wide range of issues, as diverse as lifting restrictions on voting right and a report by NATO Secretary General Yaap de Hoop Sjeffer,” said Samad Seyidov, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE and chief of Milli Majlis’ (parliament) department of international relations and interparliamentary ties.

The delegation also includes opposition MPs Asim Mollazada and Gulamhussein Alibayli, bipartisan MP Vagif Samadoglu, with the other six members вЂ" Naira Shakhtakhtinskaya, Bakhtiyar Aliyev, Gultakin Hajiyeva, Rafael Husseinov, Ali Husseinov, Aynur Sofiyeva, Aydin Mirzazada and Azar Karimli вЂ" all coming from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP).
