REPORT ON SITUATION IN AZERBAIJAN PENDING CERTAIN CORRECTIONS

Politics Materials 6 July 2005 20:06 (UTC +04:00)

Certain corrections will be made in the reports (of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Monitoring Committee) on the situation in the field of democracy development in Azerbaijan, following the ongoing visit to the country by co-rapporteurs of the Pace Monitoring Committee for Azerbaijan, Andreas Gross and Andres Herkel.

In his exclusive interview with Trend, Mr. Herkel noted that he had arrived in Azerbaijan to get thoroughly acquainted with the pre-election situation in the country, where he had a number of serious meetings with high-ranking authorities as well as opposition and NGO representatives.

“Open discussions have made it possible for all members of the PACE Monitoring Committee to get to know pre-election realities in Azerbaijan,” he said, regretting that the “revision of the Election Code of Azerbaijan вЂ" the most sensitive issue of the pre-election campaign вЂ" is still left an unsolved problem.”

“I will certainly make some corrections in my own report. In particular, I will note the neglect [by Azerbaijani authorities] of recommendations by the Venice Commission concerning the change of the composition of election commissions,” Herkel concluded.
