“The victory of Ilham Aliyev’s party in the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan is certainly for welfare of the region,” Mikhail Margelov, the chairman of the Council of Federation on International Affairs (CFIA) committee, said. “The population chooses secular way of development with turn not to the South. Taking into consideration that Azerbaijan is the main barricade preventing radical Islamic ideas, the victory has strategic significance,” the senator told journalists.

“The results of the elections were predictable, they did not sharply differ from the data of the inquiries and testified that the population supported the current regime,” he underlined. According to Margelov, the low activeness 50% is also evidence in favor of the results. “High appearance is usually observed in politicized or totalitarian countries. The population in the democratic society is slightly indifferent,” the head of the committee underlined.

He expressed hope that the opposition would acknowledge the results of the elections and would not organize disorders. “Taking into consideration that the United States and the EU agree with Russian in regard to the parliamentary elections held in Azerbaijan, similar steps will discredit the opposition. It can bring them to underground that will not promote further development of the democracy in the country,” Margelov underlined.
