Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Moldova and other post-Soviet countries rather join the EU than those bordering on it, Trend reports quoting political scientist Rasim Musabekov, speaking May 18 at the press conference on Actions Plan under the EUs Neighborhood Program.

Musabekov stated an example of North African countries to have been signed associative agreements with the EU yet 20 years ago, which supposed the greater extent of their economic integration with the Union.

However, he continued, as against Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, many post-Soviet states are today the members of the CE. This means that Azerbaijan and other countries of the former USSR are closer to Europe in political respect. Since the basic principles of the EU are democracy, human rights protection, lawful state and stability, Azerbaijan is very likely to apply for joining the EU, said the scientist.

Alongside, Mussabekov said, Azerbaijans foreign policy course is famous for its versatility. Military and political sphere lies out of the EUs competence, as Azerbaijan concluded special agreements with NATO.

В"It is not correct to speak of Azerbaijans policy balance. For example, today some 55% of Azerbaijans external trade falls for the EUВ", - scientist said.
