Meeting between Parliamentary Delegations of Azerbaijan and Armenia to Take Place in Strasburg in January 2007 Head of PACE Ad Hoc Committee

The meeting between the parliamentary delegations of Azerbaijan and Armenia will take place in Strasburg in January 2007 under the Chairmanship of Lord Russell Johnston, the Chairman of the PACE Ad Hoc Committee for Nagorno-Karabakh, Johnston briefed the media on 29 November in Baku, Trend reports.

Because this meeting cannot take place in Baku or Yerevan and it was decided to hold it in Strasburg, Johnston stated. During my Chairmanship when Azerbaijan and Armenia became members of the Council of Europe, it was expected that the conflict between the two countries would calm down, but this did not happen, Russell stressed. According to him, the creation of the Ad Hoc Committee was aimed at establishing a channel of communication between the two countries, which does not exist.

The Committee does not try to settle the conflict. The conflict may be resolved by the two countries. In principle, the Committee was created to promote the dialogue between the parliamentarians of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Johnston concluded.
