May the U.S. Congress Adopt Resolution On Armenian Genocide?

Azerbaijan and Turkey should demonstrate their economical, cultural, enlightenment, as well as military force, the Head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, Samad Seyidov, exclusively informed Trend, commenting on the information of The Associated Press with regards to the possibility of adopting the resolution On Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915 in the U.S. Congress at the beginning of 2007.

Seyidov is certain that the most accurate way to present to the World, Armenia's biased position is to do its utmost to show the world how Azerbaijan and Turkey are developing in all relations and its positive outcome. In addition, he mentioned the importance of propaganda at all levels with congressmen and the development of US-Azerbaijan and US-Turkish relations.

He stressed that the Armenians achieve everything by lobbying many high-ranking officials from various countries. I hope that if common sense prevails with the U.S. Congress, adopting the resolution on the Armenian genocide will not be allowed. At least, the policy currently pursued by Azerbaijan shows that all these insinuations by the Armenians do not have any foundation. It needs to take into consideration that the Armenian lobby is very big in the USA, Seyidov stated.

Touching upon the separate articles in the media regarding Armenian genocide, Seyidov assessed it as part of the Armenian propaganda. Even if the Armenian lobby achieves the adoption of this resolution in the U.S. Congress, it does not mean that it needs to agree with it. When Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act was adopted over Azerbaijan, we continued to show to the world that aggressors exist. It may be difficult but we must continue proving to the world that these provocations do not correspond with reality, Seyidov said.

The Chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Reforms Party, MP Asim Mollazade, stated in his interview with Trend that Azerbaijan should mobilize its forces at the level of government and civil society to fight against the Armenian lobby in the USA.

Mollazade stressed that at present there is a great probability that the new U.S. Congress will pass the resolution regarding Armenian genocide because after the election, the number of Congress members representing the interests of the Armenian lobby has increased. Currently Turkey is unable to protect its interests. Therefore, these procedures are expected to begin working in Spring of 2007, Mollazade said.

He considers serious steps needs to be taken in relation with the situation and work in the U.S. Congress. It needs to increase the number of friends of Azerbaijan and Turkey and inform the U.S. community of the genocide committed by Armenia in the territory of Azerbaijan.

Of course, it will not be easy, but it is necessary to try and at least protect the interests of Azerbaijan in this situation. We need to provide information on the genocide and crimes committed by Armenia in the territory of Azerbaijan. If the Congress intends to adopt the document on the Armenian genocide in the territory of Turkey, then it needs to include items regarding genocide that has been committed by Armenia in Azerbaijan, Mollazade said, adding that the current situation is not simple.
