UNESCO Urges Azerbaijani Government to Make Efforts on Reducing Facts of Infant Mortality More Active

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend , corr S. Aghayeva/ During the today's briefing at the end of her three-day visit to Azerbaijan, Maria Calivis, the UNESCO Regional Director for Central and Eastern EuropeUNICEF urges the Azerbaijani Government to take measures to develop its pre-school education and reduce cases connected with facts of infant mortality in the country.

The situation with the children in Azerbaijan, as well as work carried out in the spheres of health care, education, and population social protection were the key topics of the discussions the UNECO top official held in Baku. Within her visit to the country, Mrs. Calivis held a number of important meetings with partners of the Organization in the Azerbaijani Government. On the whole, she was quite satisfied with the level of cooperation with the Azerbaijani Government. Mrs. Calivis also positively assessed the efforts taken by the Government of the Country in the sphere of children rights protection, as well as improvement of the education and health care system. She expressed her satisfaction with the reforms the Azerbaijani Government took in these spheres. The UNICEF also particularly indicated the high level of infant mortality, and poor level of pre-school education in the country. "The Azerbaijani Government should put more investments to its pre-school education, and UNICEF, for its part, is ready to render necessary technical assistance in this issue,' emphasized Mrs. Calivis.
