Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamghizi / Akif Shahbazov, the chairman of the newly formed Open Society Party of Azerbaijan (OSP), has reported that the party does not have any intention to join the opposition bloc Azadlig.

Shahbazov has noted that the organization does not intend to maintain co-operation with any party or bloc. Their first priority is to define the strategy for the party. Shahbazov declined all reports on OSP's intentions to join Azadlig. He said that the leader of the party, Rasul Guliyev, had not raised the issue to re-join the bloc.

The ex-Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Rasul Guliyev, has been the leader of the Azerbaijani Democratic Party (ADP) since 1998. The ADP joined the bloc Azadlig in 1995 and resigned in February, 2007 due to a disagreement that occurred within the party. The supporters of Guliyev organized a congress of the party and announced the establishment of the OSP.
