Swedish Parliament Develops Project on South Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The project on protection of the rights of Azerbaijanis residing in Iran was developed in the Swedish Parliament, chairman of the Azerbaijan National Independence Party (ANIP), Ayaz Rustamov, has reported.

He has said that ANIP is an ally of the governing Swedish Moderat party. Moreover, the two parties are represented in the International Democratic Union. The discussion of the project on South Azerbaijan ( Iran province) in the Swedish parliament was initiated by the Moderat. The date for discussion and adoption of the project has not been fixed yet.

The project demands from the Iranian government to observe the rights of Azerbaijanis that are the citizens of the country. Education in native language, opportunities for establishment of media and political organizations, right to follow historical traditions are among the main demands.

The government pledges to submit the issue to international and regional organizations for consideration in case the Swedish parliament adopts the project.

The ANIP founded in 1992 is the first party to get registered in Azerbaijan. Etibar Mammadov, founder of the ANIP and deputy chairman of the International Democratic Union, was the chairman of the party till 2004.
