Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Aghyeva / The Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister, Vagif Sadikhov, stated on 29 May at a press conference that the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) will change its name during the next conference of the OIC Foreign Ministers Council scheduled to take place in Uganda 2008, under the chairmanship of Pakistan.
Originally, the renaming was scheduled at the meeting of the Council in Islamabad, Pakistan on 15-17 May. However, this was postponed as the project of the new Charter of the organization planned to be adopted simultaneously had not been developed. The OIC Charter was adopted in 1972. The decision to develop a new Charter was made during the latest summit of the OIC heads of state held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in 2005. A working group was formed to develop the project.
Sadikhov did not rule out the possibility of adopting the new Charter and the renaming of the organization during the next summit of the heads of government in the capital of Senegal on 17-18 March 2008.
