Several Candidates to Participate in Elections for Chairman of Islam Party
Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Hajiaga Nuri, the chairman of the Azerbaijani Islam Party, stated that several candidates will be nominated for post of chairman of the Islam Party, during a meeting of the party.
According to Nuri, the next and 6th convention of the party may be held in the summer.
Nuri will not nominate his candidature before the convention.
"During the latest convention of the party some three or four candidates were nominated for the post of chairman of the party. There will be more candidates for the forthcoming elections, but the exact number of candidates remains unknown. The struggle for the post of chairman will be among several candidates," Nuri added.
During the convention the participation of the Islam Party in the forthcoming Presidential elections will be decided. In the case of the party deciding to attend the elections, the Union of Pro-Azerbaijan forces, in which the Islam Party is represented, the party will be restored as an election bloc.
The religious opposition Islam Party was founded in August 1991. In 1992 the party was registered by the Juridical ministry of Azerbaijan. In 1995 the state registration of the party was suspended. The Union of Pro-Azerbaijani forces unites three opposition parties - the Islam Party, the Birlik Party and the Population Renaissance Party.
