More than Fifty Court Hearings Took Place in Azerbaijan against Press in September

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / In September more than 50 court hearings took place in Azerbaijan due to the lawsuits against journalists. The law suits were filed due to insult and slander. The report by the Institute for Media Rights says that 15 journalists may be arrested on the base of the considered and new lawsuits.

In September six court proceedings began on the lawsuits and in many cases, the claimants are officials and require arresting or penalizing journalists and publication. The report says that an entrepreneur from Nigeria protested against local media representatives. He made an appeal to the court for penalizing (AZN 300.000) and arresting the editor-in-chief Corruption and Society magazine.

The only positive factor is that Baku Appeal Court cancelled the fine in amount of AZN 50.000 with regards to Azadlyg newspaper and decreasing the fine from AZN 50.000 to AZN 5000.
