Policemen’s Duty not to Include Violence by Population – Azerbaijani Council on Press’s Deputy Chairman

K.Zarbaliyeva / The Council on Press blamed the Azerbaijani Internal Ministry with the structure cannot explain that the duty of the police does not include the beating of the public, the chief editor of the Ayna and Zerkalo newspapers Elchin Shikhli said during the round table dedicated to regulate relations between law enforcement bodies and the media. The meeting was implemented by the public association Journalists in extreme conditions.

The chief editor expressed his alarm at the illegal activities by the police. He also expressed alarm at the lack of information given to the policemen who have taken part in unsanctioned rallies.

Policemen who use violence against journalists must be punished. "Impunity of policemen is causing illegal actions against the public," the chief editor said. "It is necessary to maintain clarity between the media and the police," Shikhli added.

An official of the Azerbaijani Internal Ministry's press-service Ehsan Zahidov stressed that the Ministry was interested in the development of ties between the media and the police. In most cases journalists who have become participants at the rallies have experienced violence against them.

Zahidov expressed alarm at the increase of violence against policemen, saying that 3 policemen were murdered in nine months and 165 were injured.

Another two round tables will be implemented in Ganja and Khachmaz regions within the framework of the project. The goal of the project is to establish relations between the media and law enforcement departments.
