Meeting of Human Rights Task Group Held in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / The meeting by the state representatives and the law enforcement officials was held in Baku. The issues concerning the forgiveness of the detained journalists and about ten sick prisoners was discussed, stated Novella Jafaroglu, a member of the task group to the Trend agency on 24 December. She noted that some journalists did not appeal for the forgiveness. The task group appealed to the President to pardon the journalists on behalf of the group. There is Rasim Akparov, Natig Afandiyev, Mushvig Madatov and the others, among journalists who should be pardoned, stated Jafaroglu.

The issue concerning the transportation of Ali Insanov, the former ex-Health Minister of Azerbaijan, to medical centre for the operation, was also discussed during the meeting. The members of the task group promised that the issue concerning Insanov will be settled in a positive manner. Insanov was detained in October, 2005. He was accused of attempting a coup d'etat and causing the mass riots. After the decision made by the Azerbaijani Court on the Heinous Crimes dated 20 April, Ali Insanov was found guilty of the misappropriation of property and the abuse of power, and was sentenced 11years of the imprisonment. The medical examinations on him have proved that he suffers from a vertebral hernia. Jafaroglu did not exclude the possibility that the President may pardon Insanov.

The next meting of the task group was scheduled for January 2008. The pardon document may be issued on 31 Dec, on the Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis in world. The Azerbaijani President issued 42 pardon decrees in 1995. Some 4,584 prisoners were pardon.
