George Clooney Vows to Fight on Despite U.N. SNUB

( CM ) - GEORGE CLOONEY was left with a bruised ego when he paid a visit to the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday (31Jan08) - because some delegates refused to let him speak. The new U.N. Messenger of Peace was hoping convince the nations that contribute troops to the 17 official peacekeeping missions to offer further help and assistance to refugees in Darfur. But delegates from Russia and France decided they didn't need a movie star to tell them what to do and they refused to let him speak publicly. After his visit, Clooney joked, "There are groups that don't feel that I necessarily class up the joint and don't feel that I should be speaking to them." The actor/director's visit came just two days after he returned from a two-week fact-finding trip to Darfur with the U.N. assistant secretary general of peacekeeping operations. He insists he isn't going to let delegates and politicians simply ignore him - because he has too much to say about the problems he has seen in Africa. He adds, "I think what moves me the most about this entire trip was the fact that I was in Chad two years ago, and it's worse now there than when I was there. And that Sudan isn't particularly better now." During Clooney's U.N. visit on Thursday, rebels were fighting Chad's official military for control of the African nation's capital.
