( dpa ) - Smooth-stroking Daniel Gibson tipped off NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans Friday night by shooting the lights out from downtown.

Gibson knocked down a record 11 three-pointers en route to 33 points and the sophomores romped past the first-year stars for the sixth straight time, 136-109 in the Rookie Challenge game.

The Cleveland Cavaliers' hot shot guard shattered the old mark of seven threes set by Philadelphia 76ers' Kyle Korver, and fell three points shy of the most points scored in the series set by Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire in 2006.

For his sparkling performance, Gibson was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

"I just want to thank my teammates who were looking for me," said Gibson, who nailed 11-of-20 triples. "I made a couple shots and tonight was my night."

Gibson will look to continue his hot-shooting on Saturday night when he competes against defending champion Jason Kapono (Toronto), Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas), Richard Hamilton (Detroit) and New Orleans' home-town favorite Peja Stojakovic in the Three-Point Shootout.

Rudy Gay ( Memphis) scored 22 points, LaMarcus Aldridge ( Portland) had 18, Jordan Farmer (LA Lakers) contributed 17 with 12 assists for the sophomores, who improved to 7-2 in the all-time series.

In 2007, Roy was on the short end of a 155-114 pasting. However a year later, Portland's reigning Rookie of the Year and first-time All-Star selection for Sunday's NBA showpiece reversed his fortunes in the lopsided win.

"Last year we were tired and just wanted to show up," said Roy, who chipped in with 17 points. "This year, we were ready to put on a show, have fun and we were able to get the win."

Kevin Durant ( Seattle) led the rookies with 23 points. Al Horford ( Atlanta) had 19 and Spain's Juan Carlos Navarro ( Memphis) contributed 17.

In a free-wheeling first-half, showcasing promising youngsters, Gibson shot his way to 21 points with seven three-pointers, Roy had 13 and Gay followed with 11 as the sophomores raced to a 66-52 lead at halftime.

"I was just moving a lot without the ball," Gibson said. "I was trying to find the open spot and a couple of them went down for me."

The sophomores continued to separate themselves for most of the second half, but had their lead sliced to 95-84 on a three-pointer by Jamario Moon ( Toronto) with 9:14 left to play. However, Gibson buried two threes and Farmer had one in a 13-0 run, to open up a 108-84 bulge with 6:53 left, and the second-year stars pulled away for the easy win.
