Members of Azerbaijani Council on Press to Meet Internal Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku, 17 March / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The members of the Council on Press of Azerbaijan will appeal to Ramil Usubov, Azerbaijani Internal Minister, in connection with the recent attack on Agil Khalil, a journalist with Azadlig newspaper, Arif Aliyev, a Council member and chairman of Journalists Association Yeni Nasil (New Generation), stated.

The first meeting of the Association was held on 17 March. During the meeting the document, which demonstrated the department's position towards the incident, and require to take immediate measures for Agil's treatment.

Editors made the decision to meet with the Internal Minister.

On 13 March, at 8.00pm Agil Khalil, a journalist of the Azadlig newspaper, was stabbed in the chest by unknown assailants. He was immediately taken to the Clinical Medical Centre where he was operated on. A criminal case has been filed relating to Article 128 of the Criminal Code. The investigation has been held by Baku Central Police Station

Aflatun Amashov, chairman of the Council on Press, informed Trend that he spoke with the Internal Minister and the Prosecutor General's Office and questioned the course of the investigation.

"I was informed that the investigation was under the control of Usubov, and Zakir Garalov, the Prosecutor-General. I believe that the investigation will bring about positive results.

A new project, which will provide aid to the media, will be passed in the near future. Amashov said.
