Court Proceeding on Appeal by Azerbaijani Ex-Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 March / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Farhad Aliyev, Ex-Economic Development Minister, accused of corruption, has demanded that the consideration of his case should be postponed until he passes his medical examination and completes treatment. The attorney Elton Guliyev made such a statement during the hearing in Appeal Court of Baku.

F.Aliyev and his brother Rafik Aliyev, the former President of the Azpetrol Group of Companies, are accused of committing corruption-related crimes. Rest of the group is charged for attempting a coup d'etat and staging mass disorder in the country. F.Aliyev and R.Aliyev were arrested on 19 Oct 2005, and were charged of abusing power, bribery, illegal privatization of state properties and economic crimes.

The attorney said F.Aliyev has passed his medical examination in the Penitentiary Service from 5 - 20 February, but no results have been revealed.

The ex-Minister said he was detained by the political order and has been kept in prison for 2 years and 6 months without the decision of court. Aliyev stated that he required a qualified doctor.

Aliyev's' attorney stated that he lodged a petition to the Heinous Court for re-consideration because of the injustice during investigation held by the first instance court.

Attorneys, stating about illegal imprisonment of his clients in prison, lodged a petition to release them. The petition was not approved. The preparatory hearing will be held on 20 March.
