Azerbaijan, Baku, 3 April/ corr. Trend E. Huseyinli/ The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan has discovered ecological flaws in Azbentonit LTD located in Sumgayit. The management of the company was given instructions to eliminate these shortcomings. Several law violations have been discovered during the check-up conducted in the company in a course of month, said Irada Ibrahimova, the acting press secretary of the Ministry.
The list developed by the Blacksmith Institute last year placed Sumgayit among 33 most polluted cities worldwide. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan expressed its discontent about the list and sent a letter of protest to the institute which is located in New-York.
The 33 most polluted cities of the world include 8 cities from Russia, 6 from India, 2 from U.S., 2 from Romania, one from Mexico, Czechia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines accordingly.
In 1990, some 96,400 tons of poisonous substances were emitted into the air in Sumgayit while the figure went down up to 40,200 tons in 1995 and 17,600 tons 2000.
The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources imposed a fine of AZN14, 695,47 to 39 small businesses in March. Some AZN2,266 were transferred to the ecological fund.
