Director of Azerbaijani Medical School Gives Testimony in Court

Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 June / corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / The court hearings into the case of the Logman Medical School's director, who is charged with corruption crime, has begun. A preparatory judicial meeting on the crime was held, the Binagadi Region Court told Trend .

Ramziyya Abdullayeva, the accused, made a statement in the court. She did not plead herself guilty. Afterwards, several witnesses also gave their evidence.

The hearings will be restored on 4 June with the testimonies of witnesses.

The director of the school is charged in accordance with Article 309.1 of Azerbaijani Criminal Code (exceeding one's office duties).

At the decision of the court, the director is not allowed to leave the country.

The activities of the Logman were suspended in May 2006 after the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers. A lawsuit was filed on the illegal admission of students to this medical school.

The investigation was held by the Anti-Corruption Department of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Misir Mardanov, the Azerbaijani Education Minister, said that the students of Logman, which was illegally operating, would not be transferred to other schools.

In accordance with the decision of the Education Ministry, private universities are banned to admit students in the medical sphere. The State Students Admission Commission did not announce the admission of students to such schools in 2007-2008. 

The students of private medical school Logman, which was closed after the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, will not be transferred to the State Educational Schools.

At the decision of the Education Ministry, Logman was closed in 2006. However, the school continued its activity illegally. A total of 2,000 students studied at this school until the suspension of its activity.  

Mardanov said that the leadership of the school is responsible for the failure in education.
