Azerbaijani Journalists, Arrested by MP’s Complaint, Ask to Lift Convictions

Azerbaijan, Baku, 29 August / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Rovshan Kabirli, the chief editor and Yashar Agazde, a journalist of the Mukhalifat newspaper, accused on the ground of the complaint by MP Jalal Aliyev, appealed to the Appeal Court of Baku to lift their convictions.

Kabirli told Trend that the preliminary sitting of the court was held under the chairmanship of the judge Abid Abdinbayov on 29 August.

Agazade said that convictions are lifted under the law, after three years. However, the journalist's appealed to the court on the issue as it hinders their professional activity.

Aliyev accused journalists on the Article 147.2 (slander). Journalists were sentenced to two years and six months of imprisonment by the decision of the Yasamal District Court.

In the article A.M.A.Y., which is Aliyev's trade mark, is stated that Aliyev sponsors the AMAY Trade Centre.

The next trial is scheduled for 11 September.

Journalists have appealed to the European Court on Human rights.
