Court Upholds Verdict on Building Collapse Case in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baaku, 31 October / Trend , corr. K.Zarbaliyeva /Court upheld the verdict on the collapse of the building in Baku resulted in death of 25 people.

The Appeal Court of Baku considered the complaint on the verdict made on the case. The Court rejected the complaint and upheld the decision made by the Grave Crime Court.

A building which was under construction by Mutaffakir company collapsed on 28 August at 17:00 hours.. The death toll has reached 25. Use of low-quality concrete and violation of security rules caused the collapse of the building.

Asgar Aliyev, the Director General of the construction company Mutaffakir, was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment, master builders Farhad Hasanov- to seven years of imprisonment, Gadir Salimov - to five years and six months of imprisonment,  Mursal Haqverdiyev - five years of imprisonment and Eldar Rahimov- to four years and six months of imprisonment. Akif Maharramov, former head of Housing Construction Department of the Baku City Administration was sentenced to 8 months in jail.

A suit has been filed by the Baku City Prosecutor's Office in accordance with Articles 222.2 (violation of safety regulations in construction work, mining or other work resulting in death) and 222.1.2 (violation of construction safety regulations resulting in injury) of the Criminal Code.

Some part of the criminal case against the head of the Mutaffakir, Ali Muradov, was canceled due to his death. In 2007, Muradov died from cardiac failure in the investigation cell.
