New prisons being built in Azerbaijani regions: Justice Ministry

New prisons are being built in Azerbaijani regions.

"The new prisons will allow prisoners to serve their sentences near their homes. They will meet European standards," Justice Ministry Inspection for Execution of Punishments head Malik Alakbarov told Trend .

There are 18 jails, one prison, one reformatory, three remand homes, one treatment center and 15 divisional and 14 special prisons in Azerbaijan. 

He said the remand home in Ganja will be moved to another location. 

Roughly 20 hectares have been allotted near the Goygol-Shamkir Highway to build another remand home.

Alakbarov said a jail will also be built in the area.

A remand home is also being built in Baku in the Zabrat settlement.

A new jail will also be built in Davachi in northern Azerbaijan.

Land has also been allotted in the Kurdamir region to build a prison for the Aran region.

He said prisoners from Nakhchivan will be moved to a newly-built jail in Nakhchivan.

European-standard prisons are being built in Shaki and Lankaran.

A prison is also being built in the Umbaki settlement.
