Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 23 / Trend , K.Zarbaliyeva/

Prisoners at the Gobustan jail will undergo medical examinations in March, the Justice Ministry Central Medical Department Chief Rafael Mehdiyev told Trend on Feb. 23.

During the examination, prisoners will do a blood test (biochemical, general blood test and test to reveal infectious diseases), pass X-ray, cardiologic, ultrasonic, therapeutic, neurological and dermatovenerologic examination.

Over 500 prisoners are serving their punishment at the Gobustan jail.

More than 200 of them were sentenced to life imprisonment and other are prisoners who were transferred to this jail due to violating discipline, as well as who must serve punishment term under a prison regime.

There are tuberculosis patients amongst prisoners. Prisoners who suffer from tuberculosis undergo treatment at the jail3.

Basically, prisoners complain of heart, vascular, nephritic and other chronic diseases.

A key problem at the prison is connected with keeping insane people at the cells. Prisoners with serious disease are transferred to institutions of the Penitentiary Service.

Mehdiyev said that mass medical examination of prisoners was being carried out constantly. Medical examination was also carried out in the Gobustan closed prison and remand prison for women. All the necessary measures for out-patient and stationary treatment of prisoners who suffered from different diseases were taken.

For the first time after the agreement reached between the Justice Ministry and International Committee of the Red Cross in 1995, the treatment from tuberculosis is being held in the Penal Service.

In 2007, for the first time the DOTS+ treatment of prisoners suffered from multi-resident tuberculosis in remand prisons was launched. To November 2008, 115 multi-resident tuberculosis prisoners were treated.
