Azerbaijani Television and Radio Council backs opening cultural channel

Azerbaijan, Baku, March 13 / Trend , A. Huseynbala/

The Azerbaijani National Television and Radio Council (NTRC) supports opening a national cultural channel.

"Simply opening a new channel is not the issue. We must have people who will undertake responsibility," NTRC Chairman Nushiravan Maharramli said.

The NTRC granted a license to the newly established Sports Azerbaijan television channel on Feb. 1. A new regional channel was also launched in Shaki and Yevlakh in 2008. There are over 20 television channels in Azerbaijan. Nine broadcast only within the country.

Large funds are required to launch a cultural channel, he said.

"Opening a new channel will take some time. The potential of the advertisement market and staff must be taken into consideration," he added.

Maharramli said new television channels are expected to open in Shirvan and Shamakhi.
