Nearly 3,000 convicts freed in Azerbaijan upon amnesty act

Currently nearly 3,000 convicts were freed in accordance with the Amnesty Act in connection with the Novruz Holiday, which was presented to Parliament by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador to UNESCO and ISESCO Mehriban Aliyeva, a source at the Penal Service of the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan told Trend on May 25.

The Azerbaijani Parliament adopted the Amnesty Act on March 17 in connection with the Novruz Holiday, which was presented to Parliament by Mehriban Aliyeva.

The Act envisages 1,700 convicts.

The exact number of prisoners, in respect of which amnesty is applied upon three types of punishment, executed by the Penal Service, will be known upon completion of execution of the Act.

The Penal Service said that 1,710 people were released from prisons, and 1,277 - special prisons.

Nearly 30 freed convicts are women.

Up to now, eight Amnesty Acts have been adopted, which were applied to approximately 80,000 convicts.
