The Azerbaijan Education Ministry thinks unnecessary of inviting specialists to teach essentials of religion at secondary schools.

"There are quite many highly educated teachers to teach essentials of religion and we don't need specialists in the sphere of religion," head of textbooks and publications department at the Education Ministry Faig Shahbazli told Trend .

The Caucasus Muslims Office is dissatisfied with the quality of religious education at secondary schools.

"Essentials of religion are taught at secondary schools, but religious enlightenment is held without religious specialists. Graduates of the Baku Islam University should be involved in teaching of religion at schools to ensure high quality education," the chairman of the control and supervision commission, Elton Babayev, said to the 12th congress of the Caucasus Muslims Office .

Religion is not taught as a subject at secondary schools, Shahbazli said. "The religious themes are included into textbooks, including history, human and society. The textbooks narrate about values of Islam and bring some hadises [stories] of Prophet," Shahbazli said.

The Education Ministry does not consult with the Caucasus Muslims Office while developing such textbooks, he said. "The textbooks do not contain religious themes to hold consultations. The religious topics in textbooks are presented only by their authors," Shahbazli said.

The religion is split from the state power in Azerbaijan. Some 95 percent of population of Azerbaijan are Muslims and but 5 percent are Christians, Jews and representatives of other religions.
