Based on a microbiological analysis in coastal areas carried out by the Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry where treatment facilities were installed in May and June, pollution levels on nine out of beaches do not exceed the permitted limit, ministry spokeswoman Irada Ibrahimova told Trend.

The ministry has established 16 modular treatment plants in areas that are not part of the sewer network on the Absheron Peninsula in the Bilge, Buzovna, Mardakan, and Pirshagi coastal zone settlements, the Amburan Beach, as well as in Novkhani and Jorat. Local purification plants were also installed on the Novkhani, Pirshagi, Nardaran, Bilge Mardakan and Shuvelan beaches. The level of water pollution on those beaches is normal.

Ibrahimova said the ministry found microbiological contamination in areas where purification equipment was not installed, such as the Shikh and Sahil settlements.

"E. coli in the water exceeds permitted levels in these areas as sewage is not treated in accordance with standards and norms," she said.
